India-Pakistan Diplomacy
The Balochistan government has revoked an arrest warrant for 150 political activists of the Baloch Yakjahti Committee (BYC) and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M). However, Dr. Mahrang Baloch, head of BYC, and six others are still being held under the Public Order Act. The move has questioned the intentions of the government as well as its reaction to the delicate situation in Balochistan.
The latest terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, strained India-Pakistan ties. In response, Pakistan is focusing on its weakest border, Balochistan, where people already have hostility towards one another and protests break out with regular frequency. Government release of 150 activists can also be seen as an attempt to extinguish political fire in the region.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch's attorney and other petitioners approached the Balochistan High Court, where the court listened to the case on Monday. Even though the hearing was delayed to Tuesday, the Balochistan Home Department withdrew the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) orders issued against 150 activists. Dr. Mahrang Baloch and six others, such as Bibu Baloch, Gulzadi Baloch, Sabghatullah Shah, Bebargh Baloch, Sanaullah Baloch, and Mama Ghaffar Baloch, are, however, still in detention under MPO-3.
The government will put its position on the detention of these seven individuals in front of the court at the following hearing on Tuesday. The lawyers of Dr. Mahrang believe that it is a matter of political revenge, and they are awaiting justice from the court. The case highlights the complexities of Pakistan's internal security matters and its relations with India.
Pakistan's dependence on the Indus River for water and hydropower leaves it exposed to any interruption in its water supply. India's plan to build dams and hydroelectric plants along the river has instigated fear from Pakistan, and this could fuel further tensions between the two countries.
The Balochistan crisis and Pakistan-India relations are interconnected, the former affecting the latter and the latter affecting the former. The way the government deals with these issues will have long-term implications for stability and security in the country.
